Né à Montréal, Didier Leclair, de son vrai nom, Didier Kabagema, a vécu dans plusieurs pays d’Afrique avant de s’établir à Toronto. Lauréat du Prix Trillium en 2001 pour son roman, Toronto, je t’aime, il a été finaliste du Prix du Gouverneur général pour Ce pays qui est le mien. Dans Le vieil homme sans voix, Didier Leclair a senti le besoin de parler des «vieux» comme on n’en parle pas souvent.
